How to Split a PDF Into Separate Pages or Sections

Extract a single page, break a long report into chapters, or separate scanned batches — with the right method for each job.

Splitting sounds trivial until you have a 300-page scan containing eleven different documents. Choosing the right split method saves a lot of clicking.

Three ways to split

  • Extract a range. You need pages 12–18 of a report to send to one person.
  • Split every page. A batch scan where each page is its own record.
  • Split at fixed intervals. Multi-page forms scanned back to back, three pages each.

Step-by-step: splitting in Docsy

  1. Open the Split PDF tool.
  2. Upload the document and wait for the page count to appear.
  3. Choose your split mode and enter the page ranges you need.
  4. Run the split.
  5. Download the results — multiple outputs arrive as a numbered set in page order.

Naming and filing the output

Rename each output as soon as you download it. invoice-2026-04-quartz.pdf is findable in eight months; split-3.pdf is not. If the split files belong together, keep them in one folder and note the source document name.

If you need to remove a handful of pages rather than extract them, use the organise tool to delete pages directly. If you need to reorder as well as split, organise first and then split — you will do less work overall.

FAQ

Can I extract non-consecutive pages?

Yes. Specify each page or range you need, and the extracted pages are collected in the order you list them.

Does splitting change the page content?

No. Pages are copied byte-for-byte into the new files, so quality, fonts and embedded images are unchanged.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

Unlock it first with the password you hold, then split the unprotected copy.

What happens to bookmarks?

Bookmarks that point outside the extracted range are dropped, since their targets no longer exist in the new file.
